A book that does not even know the world map

Interesting book but I got skeptical about the writer especially after he put some countries under wrong continents or regions.

not on the Kindle

May be a good book but notfor the Kindle. Neither the table of contents nor the index are linked to the text. It is impossible to find your way around.

1,000 Places to See in the U.S.A. & Canada Before You Die

1,000 concise descriptions with supporting evidence to persuade the reader to journey 1,000 unique &/or beautiful places in the U.S.A. and Canada before concluding that the traveler requires a foreign destination rather than experiencing the wonders and wonderful people of the North American continent. And, you can carry the weight of that argument with you in one entertaining volume wherever you go and read it while enroute.

1000 Places To See

This is my second copy of this book as it seemed like everyone that saw it was to thumb through the pages. Thus the pages begin to get shop worn even though tihis was an almost new book. I purchased another copy for just me this time and left the older copy out for everyone that wanted to read could do so. There are many interesting places to viist a great number that I did not know about and I consider my selfself a world traveler. It's the local "stuff" in the 50 sattes that I seemed to have missed. You can't go wrong with this book and it's companion book on 1000 places in the United States and Canada. This book will not easily go out of date and part of the fun is planning a trip that will take in several of the recommendations on a single trip.

good gift

bought as gift, read through it a bit before wrapping and seemed very informative and in-depth, though slightly lengthy read! I was tempted to keep for self, will be good travel companion.

Just okay

This is a really good book it helped alot but it sometimes got frustrating to use as some of the stuff had changed since it was published and you would drive a long way to find out a place was closed down...More price lists for the things you do should of been published.

The MILEPOST 2009 Edition

I received my 2009 Milepost and promptly in pristine condition. The information in this book is detailed and easy to use. It's going to get a lot of use this Summer as we travel to Alaska via RV. I will definitely use this provider again.

Trip to Alaska using Milepost

My sister and I rented a car this past summer in Alaska. This book really came in handy on our drive from Anchorage to Fairbanks. We were able to stop and go down side roads to see and learn things we would not have known about without this book. Even the advertising was helpful. Would definally recommend, especially if you are driving.

Item arrived in the new condition stated in the "ad" on Amazon. It took longer to arrive then expected. Otherwise, the transaction was smooth.

Good guidebook

I found this useful in planning my move to AK. If there was a digital, GPS, real-time version of this as you were driving, it would be the best thing ever!

What Would I Have Done Without It?

We bought this for a trip to D.C. with our nine-year-old granddaughter. I bought it expecting it to be for her benefit, but it turned out to be for mine. I would have spent hours on the Internet getting the information given in this book. The most useful part to us was the information on which Metro stop to use for each attraction. That alone made it worth the price. The information on where to eat was very useful, too. It was small enough to fit right in my purse so I didn't have to carry it around all day. We had already decided on the sites we were going to visit, so I didn't use it for that purpose, but nevertheless, it had interesting facts that I could relate to my granddaughter. It was well worth the purchase.

Very helpful

This book gave us great ideas for places to take our 6 year old. Most importantly, he is allergic to everything and autistic. This translates into an extemely picky eater. With it's recommendations for kid-friendly eating, Around Washington, D.C. with Kids is a God-send!

Rating :

A great DC companion

This is a great DC companion if you are going with children. Easily organized with loads of tidbits like if strollers are allowed, where to find kid-friendly food nearby, what Metro stop is closest and how much the attraction costs. Although, most meusums are free. DC is a beautiful, history-rich city and a must-see for every American. You will fall in love with your country all over again--just be prepared to walk.

Best book for Kids going to DC

My 10 year old son loves this book and so do I! It tells us the important stuff, location, contact info, prices, ages & hours. It also gives us little things like places to eat and fun other thing to notice and do while we are at each place. We LOVE this book!

Rating :

Great guide for families

We used this more than the Fodor's Washington DC guide and the Eyewitness Guide. The prices, times, where to eat and Metro stops were easy to find and read. The tips about the best times to get to a specific site and when to buy tickets were great. Our kids are 11 and 8 and the suggestions about what might be interesting to them were spot on. I'd recommend this book to anyone going to DC with kids.

Top Rated by a New Yorker - December 2009

I gave this book as a gift - Christmas of 2009 - to my friend's daughter.

She could not stop reading it!!! She is in her mid-twenties - a professional - and socially active. She has been in the City for three years.

After an hour went by - it seemed she had been to about 25% of the book's suggestions --- which I found quite amazing. I kept pressing her for recommendations she disagreed with and she never came up with one. All I heard was "I have to try this".

There is little more than I can pass on to others beyond the fact that this book has passed the purview of a young, hard core, socially active New Yorker.

PS - my thanks to the other Amazon reviewers who helped me make this selection

Great way to find local stuff in NYC

Generally a good book to have on any trip to NYC especially if you are the type of person who is looking for what the natives do. Of course it has all of the touristy locations in it but it also addresses the out of the way.

Rating :

It seems more like 500, but that is a lot

This is a pretty good book, even for long time New Yorkers. The one issue I have with it is that it is very heavy on the restaurants. If that is what you like, then definitely enjoy. If you're interested in filling in the space in between, there are lots of good ideas, but not nearly as many as the title would imply.

Still, it's not a bad purchase, and if you're getting it as a gift or for something to stir the pot of ideas, it would be one to consider. There are potentially a few others that are better if you are into more active adventures, or if you are willing to travel around the greater NYC area.

Feeds history and curiosity!

I've been visiting New York since I was a child, and finally just moved to Long Island to finish my undergraduate degree. I LIVE to go to the city on the weekends and this book has definitely turned out around my New York experience. The authors divide the book into sections for what you're looking for (classics, arts & entertainment, food, 24-hour fun, etc.) They tell you about things you can see all the time, as well as the festivals/activities that go on seasonally. Some of the destinations no longer stand, but i still took the initiative to go and look anyway, since they provided a little historical summary. They also organize everything in the back by district or part of New York, so you won't be running all over the city.
It's been a great guide to help me organize how I'm going to spend my time for the weekend! It's a fabulous book for residents and visitors; it made me more excited about moving there someday and more confident that I'll NEVER run out of things to do!

best book on NYC yet

By far the best book on NYC ever. I have read many and there is just no comparison. However, I gave mine away after digesting it cover to cover and have recently ordered another one that doesn't seem to be shipping out too quickly??

Complete with maps of every park, including detailed maps of hiking trails in the major parks.

Customer Review :

We love this book

There are probably a jillion books about National Parks, but this one has the information a family with growing kids needs to make the most of visits to them. With this book as a guide, we have already visited over a dozen East Coast parks, and it has been of great assistance, especially in helping maximize the experience for the parks we only had a limited time to enjoy. We continue to use it to help map out our trips, we will be hitting 3-4 more parks this summer.

Rating :

GREAT for the parks it covers, but doesn't cover enough

I found the information in this book much more useful than any other travel guide I have purchased. The lodging information for Yellowstone, for example, describes the state of specific room types at each location!

This book's one failing is its skimpy selection of parks.

Rating :

Excellent

I really like this book. While it is supposedly geared for kids, I think it's very useful for finding interesting things to do at National Parks for everybody. I don't know why I didn't know this - but when I looked at the table of contents I realized just how few National Parks there are in the East. One side effect of reading this book is that it's made me realize what a precious resource these National Parks are to all of us, and it makes me wonder why there aren't more of them.

Helpful in making comfortable but affordable reservations. Would be most helpful for those with strollers, helpful for us to get started. Glad I purchased it.
