Packed with insider information in an easy-to-use format, Fodor's guide to Barbados and St Lucia explores an exciting and extremely popular holiday destination

Limited use as a travel guide
This book as very little in depth information though it does cover a broad range of topics. I'll be looking for a better guide.

Good enough for basics of Barbados as a traveler's starter guide
I got this right before I went to Barbados in late September. The book seemed to be fairly up to date. The book was small and compact, convenient for traveling, and easy to read. One negative is the lack of photos and visual aids in the book. There are a lot of more helpful and colorful pamphlets and brochures for free once you arrive at Barbados airport. We ended up using the travel office at our resort hotel to get more information and purchase tickets for excursions. I do want to pass along these free pamphlets and brochures to the professional travel guide companies though!
Free internet sites with travelers' opinions are more informative for getting more up-to-date frank feedback, especially for rare destinations, such as Barbados. Of course, the points of views may be swayed and tend to be a place for people to vent about bad experiences. This book is not too pricey, so I did not expect too much. Unlike Planet Lonely and other competitors, I believe that Fodor's intention for the "In Focus" series to be "starter" travel guides to help beginners learn a few basic things about the destination. Let me put it this way, it's better than nothing if you are a planner with spontaneity not being your strong suit. Have fun!
PS By the way, I did my first all-inclusive vacation at Barbados, which reduced the stress about having to find a place to eat and things to do every day. Of course, we wanted to get away from the resort hotel sometimes, so the book was one way to spark our interest to get more information on particular excursions.

Editorial Review :
This 120-page, small pocket-sized book tells you all you need to know about St. Lucia's attractions, from its spectacular rainforest to its fine beaches, from towns shaped by pretty squares and French-colonial architecture to colourful underwater treasures around pristine reefs. An introductory chapter details its history and culture; and a comprehensive information section at the back of the book is packed with hotel and restaurant listings, essential contact addresses and numbers. Plus dozens of top-notch, full-colour photographs and maps.

Great compact guide
This book came in handy on our recent visit to St. Lucia. It was small and had great pictures. The top 10 sights of St. Lucia list was also helpful. The book was organized by areas of the Island, so it was difficult to make comparisons without flipping back and forth. Overall I would give the book a high recommendation.

hummmmmmmmm it's OK.
Well, I just got this from Amazon (1 month to get it delivered!) and am unimpressed. I've read it, and just don't feel any more ready for my trip than I did before. I also ordered the landmark guide, and if it ever comes, I'll compare it as well.... The pictures ARE lovely and it's a handy size for throwing in a pocket or bag. Will update the review after I return from St Lucia....

Editorial Review :
Saint Lucia is a Caribbean island which truly lives up to its travel brochure descriptions: an island of breathtaking beauty with miles of magnificent coastline, panoramic mountain views, lush vegetation and favorable climate. Its people, history, language and culture are a blend of the rich heritage of Africa, France and England. It is the home of the only drive-in volcano in the world, where the fascinating Sulphur Springs bubble. Saint Lucia is also famous for producing two Nobel Laureates and for staging an annual Jazz Festival that has become the talk of the entire world. In addition, Saint Lucia is a tourist paradise hosting more than 700,000 visitors every year. In this comprehensive guide, updated with all new photographs, Guy Ellis provides a profile of this "Helen of the West." A journalist for more than four decades, he edited the island's leading newspaper, the Voice, for 20 years before moving on to start a newspaper of his own, The Saint Lucia Mirror. In 2003, Ellis was honored by Her Majesty the Queen as a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to journalism. As one who remains in touch with every development that takes place on the island, he is well qualified to write this guide to his mother country.

Good overview
This is a good book for an overview of St. Lucia. It has nice pictures and briefly describes many of the locations. It is not a travel guide in that it only mentions a few hotels (and not the newer ones) and restaurants. For me, it was like a book of postcards, giving a glimpse of St.Lucia.

Book on St. Lucia but not a Tour or Guide Book
I bought this book hoping for a tour guide type book. I am not really sure what this book is trying to be. The photos are very nice and there is information I have not seen elsewhere. However, there are few details on only a select number of hotels - the hotel write ups contain no information on getting in touch with the hotels, their prices, ratings, or websites. Each hotel has 2-10 sentences written on it. There is some unique content about the history of the island and the men who have been involved in the evolution of the island.
For quick reading and information on the culture - I would give it 4 stars. Because it is advertised as a guide book, I give it 3. This book is not helpful for travel planning.

Get in the mood for the tropics
Sit back and relax...This one takes you on an appetizing ride through all st Lucia has to offer. Well, maybe its is a bit aimed at the tourist attractions but that's what made it so good for me: you can actually experience everything in the book yourself without going through too much trouble. And when we returned home, we only needed to flick through the pages to get that relaxed caribbean glow again. Take this book together with the 'rough guide' and you'll both have the glamour and the practical.

A Great Coffee Table Book
The book has excellent content and wonderful color photos of St. Lucia, its people, culture, and geography. However, my sole complaint is that it is not laid out as well as it could be. It would be difficult to use this book as a real guide due to its lack of expansive "nitty-gritty" information such as exact locations, mileage, cost, etc. The book is instead an excellent casual read for someone curious about the island.
