Editorial Review :

Nevis is one of those Caribbean islands of which dreams are made--off the beaten track, little known and untouched by mass tourism. For a small island--a mere 35 square miles --Nevis possesses a rich and colorful history. It was the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton (1757); Horatio Nelson met and married Fanny Nisbet there (1787) at a time when the island's beauty, combined with the reputation of its planter and merchant families for social grace and good living, caused it to be known as "the Queen of the Caribees." Today, together with St Kitts, Nevis forms the independent Commonwealth State of St Kitts-Nevis. The fifth edition of this guide has been completely revised and updated and amply demonstrates that the island's claim to be "Queen of the Caribees" is proudly maintained.

Lot's of History

Contains lot's of interesting history and background information which can add "depth" to your travel experience. Nice photos and some suggestions on what to do and see. But, it's not really a travel guidebook.

Dated

Provides a good overview but is a bit dated already. Some of the businesses listed have closed up shop. I found more current information online and downloaded it into my PDA.

Very useful!

I found this book to be extremely helpful. Very practical advice. The only thing I found not to be true was "dressing for dinner". I found that casual dress was by far the best in St. Kitts. Anyone taking a trip to St. Kitts and Nevis should read this book!

The first edition of this book, Adventure Guide to the Leeward Islands, won second place in the Best Book category of SATW's Central States Chapter. Each of the islands in this chain - Anguilla, St. Martin/Sint Maarten, Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts & Nevis - has its own history, culture and ecology, offering a cultural melange for those on an island-hopping vacation. In addition, youll find an entire run-down on where to stay and eat, from five-star resorts to family-run B&Bs and from haute cuisine to roadside stands selling the best BBQ chicken on the island. Focusing on outdoor activities, the authors recommend local tour operators and adventure outfitters, with contact names and numbers. Maps and photos.

Adventure Guide to Anguilla, Antigua, St. Barts, St. Kitts,

I am sorry but this was worthless. All the information in this book is on the internet. This book brings no value to a traveler going to any of these locations.

Rating :

Search the web instead

I read the review that said this book was worthless and chose to ignore it - mistake! You can definitely find all of this information, plus a whole lot more, via the few websites and message boards about Anguilla. Buy a book to read on your trip instead!

Buy Frommers or Fodors instead

I was very disappointed with this guide book. I've bought a lot of guidebooks and have never seen one as general as this one. The information contained in Fodors or Frommers big Carribean books give better coverage to St. Kitts which is what I was interested in learning about.

Rating :

Out of Date

Dec 2006 - Just finished 7 days on nearly all islands
in this book. Maps and general info. ok.
Other info out-of-date.
Saw a 2007 travel book just released (Frommers?).
Summary, get a more current and up-to-date guide for
the Lesser Antilles.
Lesser Antilles is a great place to visit. You want
to do fancy - it is very expensive.
Otherwise, did not find costs outrageous.

Helpful Guide

I have found this book to be an informative helpful guide about some of the Carribean islands which little seems to be written.

It is particularly useful for someone, like myself, who is ready to explore the Carribean beyond their own favorite island, in my case - St. John.

I am finding it to be a great resource tool.

A minor fault - I wish it had more colored pictures.

Street’s Guides are the result of his forty-four years of Caribbean experience— his first guide to the Virgin Islands (1964) has been expanded over the years to cover the entire eastern Caribbean. These guides give the mariner all the information needed to safely cruise the area, not only piloting information but also interesting background information on people, places and history.

“In the beginning was the word and the word came from Street. Since 1964 all other guide authors have followed in Street’s and Iolaire’s wake, avoiding the rocks and shoals Street and Iolaire discovered.”

Editorial Review :

This is the tale of the pleasures and challenges that Bill and Joan F. Harrington experienced as they followed their dream of retirement on the island of St. Kitts in the West Indies. Ignoring traditional retirement spots in the United States, they built their picture-book home on the cliffs overlooking the Caribbean.

The warmth, friendliness and humor of the islanders provided a wealth of stories to tell. They also found the history of the island especially intriguing, since they discovered closer ties to their own country than they realized. If you are considering retirement, you can learn from their experiences. Caribbean island life is an interesting option to explore.

Highly recommend it to anyone that is interested in buying a property in St. Kitts.

Live De Life: Caribbean Island Style

Book was boring!!!!!! Can't believe I finished it. Great idea for a book, but author spent too much time telling history or talking (on and on) about people from the island. Was expecting more adventures.

Don't Bother

There are a lot of good books out there on island life, island living, moving to and sailing around Caribbean islands. Unfortunately, this isn't one of them. I was variously angry and astonished at Harrington's attitude and seeming obliviousness to her own ignorance. An upper-middle-class American couple transplants its lifestyle and sensibilities to a Caribbean island? So what? I'm left wondering why they bothered, and why I bothered buying this book.

Discover St. Kitts

Anyone interested in the Caribbean will enjoy this book. Beautifully written, it explores the magnificence of St. Kitts and captures the spirit and soul of the island's people. Personal experiences and fascinating anecdotes provide colorful examples of "de life."

Adventurous and Inspiring

Highly recommended! This entertaining and educational read is like getting a private tour of the magical island of St. Kitts. It's full of personality, spirit and humor. Read and you'll be recommending it!
