Great guide!

I browsed a few travel books on Jamaica and found this one to be one of the better ones. It is very clear, concise and has great info. I especially like the accommodations section with detailed contact info (phone number, email, website, etc. the price is always accurate due to seasonal fluctuations) and recommended itinerary tailored to different travelers.

This Book Is Awesome

I saw this book on the shelf and picked it up because I simply liked the colors. (I'm a visual person)I was attracted to it. I read a couple of the pages and thought, wow this is an easy read ( I'm not a huge fan of long drawn out explainations). After going straight to the section of the book I was interested in I was thoroughly pleased with the information, advice and funny descriptions of certain locations. After putting this book to the test and actually visiting the locations mentioned, I have to say I absolutely love this book!!!! The author is on point. Some of the info has to be updated because some establishments are no longer in business other than that. OLIVER HILL I LOVE YOUR BOOK.

Customer Review :

I just returned from Jamaica and this book was of no help!

For example, the book lists a tour company for Ocho Rios. I called the company and they stated they do not even tour the area. In addition, with no photos of the attractions described, the book is useless. The airport gift shops had better Jamaican books than this one.

In addition, the book is suppose to be the source on Jamaica yet doesn't mention the bath area or the healing springs at all. I would not recommend this book.

Not Worth It

A fairly useless guide, with many facts but no feeling. Everyone knows their own expectations of Jamaica. This book does not address this at all.

Great tool for sifting through the options

I grew up in Jamaica, but never really took advantage of the "tourist stuff" while there (who does that at home?). I found this book very helpful for sifting through all the many things the island had to offer and targeting the best (and most reasonably priced) restaurants, hotels, etc. on my last visit.

Only thing they missed, like most reviews, is the cultural differences across the island. Just like Arkansas and New York don't have the same culture, accent, terms, etc., the same is true of different regions in Jamaica.

Good basic information

We're going to Jamaica next year and although there is an ABUNDANCE of information online I really wanted a small travel book to have at home and to take with us. I looked up numerous book reviews, but kept coming back to the Frommers Guides. Additionally I took notice of others that suggested not wasting money on purchasing an updated version, because this version was just as helpful. Either way I figured I'd get at least my $5 out of it and so far I have. In fact the couple that is going with us saw it on a table at our house and after looking through it asked where they could get their own copy? (I told them Amazon.com of course!) It definitely has some useful information for the area we will be visiting, including several attractions we were curious about like Dunns River Falls and the Rain Forest Trams in Ocho Rios. The maps, although small are nice to have too. All in all, I'm happy with this purchase.

Just in time for vacation

Great book as Christmas gift along with spending money for son and daughter-in-law's vacation in June. With 4 children under 11, they need to plan it all out now in order to hit the ground running when they land in lovely Jamaica. Our son was last in Jamaica as a post college single dude. Now after 15 years of marriage and 4 little ones, his focus on this trip will be just a little different!

Pointless travel snobbism

This book may possibly please the self-righteous, politically-correct backpacking crowd, but for the average tourist this book is a true waste of money. This book goes as far as to suggest that it wouldn't be too bad if the major resort spots get swallowed up by the next hurricane. It also serves as an advertisement for a PC book against resort tourism by one of the authors. This horrible little exercise in travel snobbism does not deserve an audience.

Outsiders Guide to Jamaica

I recently purchased this book, with high expecatations. It has a good 'grass roots' theme of Jamaica. A more intimate look at Jamaica, but don't look to buy this book if you plan to stay in the tourist district. There isn't much substance to find for tourists, but if your looking for a 'locals guide' this is the book for you.

Great guide to Jamaica!

If you plan to stay at an all-inclusive resort during your entire stay, this book is NOT for you.
If you plan to tour around the island the back packer way, this book is for you.
We spent 2 weeks in Jamaica and did the whole circle (started in Montego Bay, went to Negril, Treasure Beach, Kingston, Port Antonio, Ocho Rios and then back to Montego Bay). In general, the book has good info about places to visit, to stay and to eat. Some info are outdated since the 4th edition we used was published in 2007, but most are good and useful.
BTW, our favorite place is Treasure Beach (South Shore) and Port Antonio.

Ahh.... Expected More

Not a bad book, alot of useful stuff in there. Wife bought it for me for Christmas, were headed there 01/28/2010... here in a few weeks. As with everything now a days your not gonna get away from the liberal tree hugger statements, anyone thats gonna buy the book doesnt have plans of going there to wreck the place, but what are ya gonna do. Kinda dry also compaired to the rest of my Lonely Planet books. Glad i got the book and glad i read it, always helps to know what its gonna be like. Glad were going, sounds like a cook place.

Regular Lonely Planet Book

Run of the mill Lonely Planet book. However, if you are doing Jamaica any other way than all inclusive I would skip the island as a whole unless you really are looking for greener aspects of the island. I was thoroughly disappointed in my trip to Jamaica and the book has some odd advice at times and doesn't paint a realistic picture.

Rating :

Not updated

Like most Lonely Planets it is a very helpful and accurate book. It has great background info and the maps are very accurate, unlike some guidebooks. Our criticism is that we bought the brand new version but the accomodation, activity and transportation prices are totally outdated. Expect to pay considerably more for pretty much everything. Also, the book has no info on supermarkets.
We would buy Lonely Planet, just not pay for the latest version.

No one does it better

This book stood me in good stead when I visited Jamaica earlier this year. Typically of Lonely Planet's materials, however, I found this book to be of the most use in preparing for the trip. Whether I am different from other travelers or not, I like to come to a destination at least somewhat aware of the history, culture, geography, etc. There simply is no comparison between the background information you can quickly gain by perusing Lonely Planet's introductions to a country and that provided by other popular guidebooks. I felt well prepared to plan and understand my trip to Jamaica after reading this book. Indeed, I believe my trip would have been much less enjoyable had I not had a basic understanding of the people and sites I eventually saw on my trip.

Though somewhat less importantly to me, a few inaccuracies in the specific destination entries mar this otherwise fine guidebook. I was quite pleased with the hotel I chose based in part on the recommendation of Lonely Planet (Country Country, by the way). Other entries seemed unexpectedly out-of-date for the relatively recent publication date. This may be out of Lonely Planet's hands, but it was a concern nonetheless. I certainly would have been uncomfortable had I been more off the beaten path, when I discovered an attraction or a place of lodging had been closed.

All in all, I would not have changed any of my experiences in Jamaica. Similarly, I would change very little about this book. The relatively extensive history allowed me to choose attractions intelligently and understand the context. The chapters on wildlife, food and music allowed me to choose authentic Jamaican experiences over the generic. Typically well done.

Lonely Planet Jamaica -- Oh, how the mighty have fallen!

I am a longtime advocate of Lonely Planet guides, having first used them nearly 10 years ago on my travels through Africa and more recently in my Caribbean travels, as well as on jaunts to First World locales in Europe and the U.S. I have always found them to be well-researched and reasonably trustworthy guides for young(ish) adults. For some, they are even considered to be the "Bible" of intrepid travellers! However, I have recently detected a gradual but unmistakable decline in the quality of Lonely Planet guides, demonstrated nowhere as clearly as in the woefully inadequate pages of the LP guide to Jamaica (published 2006).
My husband and I just got back from a week in Jamaica, where we rented a car to explore, using the LP as our sole guide. We found the LP's maps of Jamaica to be deplorable--and, in some cases, outright wrong! They are certainly not suitable for those wanting to drive themselves around the island. In fact, the LP's author did not seem to be too keen on the self-drive option, as he rarely even mentions this option, nor does he include helpful info such as driving times between major towns. I was very surprised to see this, as in the past I have found LP to be particularly good at providing this sort of information.
I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviewer that says everything (especially prices) seems to be out of date. I do realize that using a 2006 book for a 2008 trip carries such a risk, but the disparity was so great as to render the info practically useless.
The biggest problem with the LP Jamaica guide is indicative of the general downshift in quality of the LP series -- I have noticed it in all of the most recent LP guides I have purchased. The author's reviews (of accommodations, restaurants, attractions, etc.) alternate between blandly uninspired to blatantly biased. One the one hand, you wonder if the author has even visited half the establishments he includes, given the unhelpful generalities he uses (If I read the word "pleasant" one more time, I'm gonna scream!). Sometimes the descriptions clearly do not match the establishment and you're left feeling cheated (and sometimes angry, especially if you've driven a very long way to get there!!). On the other hand, some of his reviews are very obviously influenced by whatever perks he received from the establishment; glowing reviews that hype up this hotel or that restaurant, only to be shattered when the reader arrives and has a totally negative experience. This is what I expect from the "average" travel guides I typically try to avoid. In no way are these the "unbiased reviews" upon which LP has built its mighty reputation. The author should be ashamed of himself, and LP should really clean up its act by getting rid of writers like this and rebuilding the basic integrity that has made it a great travel guide series.
There are a myriad of other small errors and omissions, although I probably could've overlooked some of these had the author gotten the big stuff right. Unfortunately, he (and, more critically, Lonely Planet) have *really* missed the mark on this book. For me, it represents money wasted and a lot of unnecessary frustration on my trip to boot. Think twice before purchasing this guide.
