The handy pocket-size guide is packed with useful information, tips and recommendations, accompanied by colour photographs, charts and maps for the first-time traveller who wants to experience the major highlights that Barbados has to offer. This travel book surpasses other guides in that it incorporates essential information in an easy-to-carry and easy-to-read format that is attractive and
useful at the same time. It provides a visitor with an invaluable introduction to Barbados by concisely highlighting the region’s ‘must see’ areas in a practical and user-friendly format, thus encouraging the tourist to make the most of his/her available time. All the essential information you need to get around an unfamiliar region is compacted into useful and practical ‘At-a-Glance’ sections at the end of each chapter. The fold-out map of Barbados is ideal for tourists and visitors. In addition to the main map of Algarve, which highlights scenic routes, it features 2 detailed area maps and 10 town plans.

travel guide to Barbados

This little book was perfect for sticking in pocket or purse and had loads of detailed information about all the great places to go in Barbados. The map had enough detail to guide us. The only shortcoming was a lack of bus directions, and this is a country with great bus service. We found the bus schedules on the internet.

Packed with insider information in an easy-to-use format, Fodor's guide to Barbados and St Lucia explores an exciting and extremely popular holiday destination

Customer Review :

Good enough for basics of Barbados as a traveler's starter guide

I got this right before I went to Barbados in late September. The book seemed to be fairly up to date. The book was small and compact, convenient for traveling, and easy to read. One negative is the lack of photos and visual aids in the book. There are a lot of more helpful and colorful pamphlets and brochures for free once you arrive at Barbados airport. We ended up using the travel office at our resort hotel to get more information and purchase tickets for excursions. I do want to pass along these free pamphlets and brochures to the professional travel guide companies though!

Free internet sites with travelers' opinions are more informative for getting more up-to-date frank feedback, especially for rare destinations, such as Barbados. Of course, the points of views may be swayed and tend to be a place for people to vent about bad experiences. This book is not too pricey, so I did not expect too much. Unlike Planet Lonely and other competitors, I believe that Fodor's intention for the "In Focus" series to be "starter" travel guides to help beginners learn a few basic things about the destination. Let me put it this way, it's better than nothing if you are a planner with spontaneity not being your strong suit. Have fun!

PS By the way, I did my first all-inclusive vacation at Barbados, which reduced the stress about having to find a place to eat and things to do every day. Of course, we wanted to get away from the resort hotel sometimes, so the book was one way to spark our interest to get more information on particular excursions.

Limited use as a travel guide

This book as very little in depth information though it does cover a broad range of topics. I'll be looking for a better guide.

America’s #1 bestselling travel series

Written by more than 175 outspoken travelers around the globe, Frommer’s Complete Guides help travelers experience places the way locals do.

  • More annually updated guides than any other series
  • 16-page color section and foldout map in all annual guides
  • Outspoken opinions, exact prices, and suggested itineraries
  • Dozens of detailed maps in an easy-to-read, two-color design

The ship is only half of the cruise experience--the other half is the time you spend ashore. Frommer's Caribbean Ports of Call offers the most complete guide to all the ports, with a critical, insider's look at all the organized shore excursions offered by the cruise lines themselves, Since it usually makes more sense to explore on your own, we'll take you to all the best beaches, golf, water sports, shopping, dining, and casinos--the attractions and activities that can easily fit into your limited time, starting from the cruise docks. You may only have a few hours, but we'll make sure you know exactly how to hit the highlights on your own. You'll also get a complete rundown of all the major ports of embarkation and maps of each destination.

Caribbean Ports of Call

Great book to throw in your backpack and take with you on the cruise. You can bone up on a bit of the history and it will get some ideas ffor excursions or places to visit on the islands.

Frommer's Caribbean Ports of Call

A useful book for planning visits to Caribbean islands. I am using this with the descriptions of my cruise ship's shore excursions: Do I want the shorex, or do I do the sightseeing on my own? The book also gives opinions on what is worthwhile to see and what isn't...which you don't get from the cruise line (everything is worth seeing). The recommendations on what to buy or not buy at each stop are also worthwhile.

The acid test for this book will come when I take the cruise: were the recommendations good or not?

Typical travel guide

Typical travel guide - but in reality, I should have just gone to the library, checked out a similar or same book, photocopied the pages I wanted - or found the same information on line. I won't buy these type of books again as I always end up using just a small portion of them.

Travel Book

This book was nice, it described the ports of call that we visited in detail.

it did not, however, contain a section for Labadee, Haiti. this is a private beach owned by Royal Caribbean Intl, so i can see why this was not included.

good book, fast shipping.

Ports of Call

I personally did not read this book, I bought it for my pastor and his wife who won a cruise. I can tell you it arrived in a timely manner and was in excellent condition. I always rely on Frommer's travel guides-they are the best.

With 80 sketch charts this is the most comprehensive guide covering The Windward Islands. The Windward Islands Guide contains GPS waypoints, approaches and routes, anchorages, dive sites, an extensive appendix, photos and a bibliography. As with all of Steve's guides it contains sections on history, marina services, and much more useful info.

A Cruising Guide To The Windward Islands

I bought this book along with the Chris Doyle book. unfortunately THIS book is NOT IN COLOR. :( but if you cant buy the Chris Doyle book this has many b/w images to give you advice on harbor hopping the windward islands. I always like as much info as i can bring when your in the middle of nowhere. ie. the islands.

Fantastic Guide-The Real Deal

Before purchasing this book, I did a bit of research on the different guides available. One had a lot of advertisements, but was popular. It was more like a Frommers travel book. This one was written by the guy who actually used equipment relied upon by chartmakers for local depth soundings. You could tell by his "local" hints that he really took the time and effort to give you the insider's view. From recomming "Mr.Fantastic" (a local boat vendor who sold us delicious lobster), to recommendations on local restaurants at each of our island stops along the way, this book was fantastic. The black and white pages made it all the more authentic as not being overly commercialized. In each port he gave highly reliable waypoints which I fed into my Garmin GPS, and everything worked like clockwork. His depth soundings in the anchorages were highly reliable as well. Our crew of 6 sailors, all passionate for adventure in the Windward Islands, raved about this book. Other books were aboard, but this one quickly became the one that we relied upon. It was concise and to the point, and we really enjoyed using it. Accolades to Mr. Pavlidis. This is a winner!!

Good adjunct to Chris Doyle's guide

I just got back from chartering in St.Vincent and found that both guides (this and Chris Doyle's) benefit when used together.

Pretty Good

Lots of great info. Unfortunately in Black and White. Good complement to the "Sailors Guide to the Windward Islands".

The large format Barbados Travel Map allows the traveler to locate cities, towns, major roads and scenic routes, airports, hotels, golf courses, holiday resorts, parks and nature reserves.  In addition, the reverse side incorporates area maps and town and city plans of the major centers.

Customer Review :

You will get lost even with this map!

Decent map, though with inadequate street signs in Barbados you will never know if you are on the right street. Locals are very friendly and helpful and we stopped often for directions. The locals helped us more than the map did.
