Customer Review :
Good compact book
All in all, I think this is a good resource. There are a few things that seemed a bit out-dated (comparing to my AAA travel guide for the Caribbean), but I understand that there is a 2010 edition soon to be released.
The city maps are extremely helpful, and are really great to use for walking tours. There is just enough background information to be interesting, but not too much to be boring.
Would definitely recommend.

Used as a second source before taking our trip. Good overall info. Plan to buy one before any trip.

Up to date. Well Organized. Wish it had more photos
Read it before going to PR. (Unfortunately, left it in the airplane while landing in PR!) The book seemed to be up to date. It is well organized, things are easy to find. But it has almost no pictures of the attractions, that is something they can certainly improve upon. It also has good coverage of Vieques and Culebra. Lot more practical information compared to Insight's guide to PR. But that guide has a lot of good pictures and articles in discovery channel style about PR.

Great, informative book!
Whenever I'm planning a trip I aways buy a number of travel guides--Moon, Rough Guide, Insight, Lonely Planet, etc. to read beforehand but this is the first time I've ever bought a Fodors. It's a great addition to my Puerto Rico collection. The book is as informative or even more so than some of the other guides. But what I really like about it is its organization-- with lots of easy to read listings. The book is small and compact (not a pocket size) and feels good in the hand also. In fact, I've decided that this will be the one guidebook that I will take with me to Puerto Rico.

Went on vacation to Aruba. Had to book to review and was a nice asset to the internet review we had completed. It was also portable while there unlike the internet at times. Like Fodor's works - would recommend.

Now we're excited to go!
I bought this as a stocking stuffer for my wife as we are going to Aruba in a couple of months. Its a nice, concise overview of the island and it gave us alot of great ideas on what we will want to do. It has alot of pictures to give you the concept of some areas and the advice seems fairly balanced. The size will make it easy to bring this along with us.

Great for trip planning
We are planning a trip to the Turks and Caicos Islands in the next few weeks. We were thrilled to see this new version from Fodor's. It is loaded with answers to all the questions you might have about this up and coming destination. I highly recommend it - especially for first timers like ourselves.

Fodor's In Focus Turks and Caicos Islands, 1st Edition
This is about as complete book you can get if you plan to Travel to Turks and Caicos. It makes you feel comfortable with choosing excursions and where to eat even if you've never visited before. I know firsthand some of her choices are excellent. About the only thing I can say bad is a couple editing errors and would of liked some pictures.

Great to have before and during your trip
When I first went to the Turks and Caicos Islands, I found it difficult to find travel information in print. Sometimes there would be a chapter in a book devoted to the Bahamas; usually, there was never a map. I bought this book to use while planning our second trip. I checked first for information that I had already discovered myself, to see how my opinion differed from the author. I believe it to be very accurate and the author's opinions to cover both the pros and cons of the subjects. And the maps are definitely worth the price of the book alone! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it didn't have any pictures. Since the Turks and Caicos, and especially the island of Providenciales, are famous for its beaches, it would have been nice to have a few colored photographs to give the reader information as to what type of beach it is, i.e. long and narrow, wide but rocky, etc. Plus, all travel books should make you simply hunger for your destination, and one look at a T&C beach can do the trick!

Haiti in Focus: A Guide to the People, Politics, and Culture (In Focus Guides)

Editorial Review :
During two centuries of independence from colonial rule, Haiti has developed into a society quite distinct from those found in the rest of the region. Hollywood-derived images of black magic and Graham Greene-inspired conceptions of a "nightmare republic" do scant justice to the reality of life for those who make up the third largest population in the Caribbean. How did the slaves of France's most prosperous colony defeat the armies of Napoleon, Spain, and Britain? Why did the U.S. occupation of 1915-34 fail to establish a plantation economy in Haiti? Haiti in Focus is an authoritative and up-to-date guide to this fascinating country. The guide explores the land, history and politics, economy, society and people, culture and environment, and includes tips on where to go and what to see.
Customer Review :
A Great Overview of Haiti
This little book is very thorough, accurate, and informative. This book isn't meant for the causual globe-trotting tourist but for someone who really wants to understand Haiti. The book touches on several subjects (history, agriculture, politics, religion) and then links the subjects together in a simple but thorough way that makes sense.
It also touches on important but obscure subjects like why the well-intentioned eradication of the poor farmers' "Creole Pigs" in the 1980s led to much of the rural problems today. Or why 5 Gourdes (Haiti money) is called "one dollar", which is something that confuses new visitors.
This isn't a deep, complex book either. It's easy to read. And it doesn't seem to have any particular political bias.
If you want a good book on Haiti, this is it!

Haiti - a short introduction
This is a thin booklet providing a nice overview of Haitian culure, politics and history: it contains a little bit of everything, illustrated by photographs. The scope of the book is limited, however, and considering political conflicts and agenda, it has aged a bit since 2002 edition. I like the fact that the booklet invites you to further reading, including online resources. At times, I found the language a bit twisted and information a bit insufficient (which is to be expected). If you feel you're missing some general knowledge on Haiti, this is an excellent book to start with (and easy to take with you anywhere), but make sure you update yourself with the latest political issues, before making a decision to travel there. In the time of writing this review, most Western countries advise their citizens not to travel to Haiti. That being said, I think the front page photo provides a great insight ...

Not much depth but good approach
Too bad the book is too short and doe not go into the details of the pre- and post- independence periods of Haiti, whiwh are crucial for the country's future to come then. Otherwise a good 1st approach to the global situation of Haiti.
Rating :
great info on Haiti
really comprehensive view of politics and life in haiti. useful tips for the traveler to Haiti including where to buy condoms!
Rating :
Good overview of Haiti
Don't purchase this book if you're looking for an in-depth travel book, an economic or cultural primer. Do purchase this book if you would like to get a general overview of Haiti, that includes a brief mention of the voodoo religion (spelled voodou in the book). It's a good starter book to learn more about the unspoken half of island of Hispanola. A quick read.
