Planning a future trip

We found this book to be very useful for planning a future trip to the Maritime Provinces of Canada. It provided information on cruise services and some of their itineraries, along with the usual and very useful information on each of the localities.

best travel guide to NS

My fiance and I are going to Nova Scotia on our honeymoon this summer. This guide was the best one I've found. We're also going to Prince Edward Island and this book covers all of the Atlantic provinces. It even has sample itineraries which have been helpful because we are creating a honeymoon registry. Great buy! I would also recommend requesting free information from the tourist office of NS, they send out an informative brochure/book.

Comprehensive coverage of outdoor activities and extended itineraries chapter for those travelling aroung the area.

Customer Review :

Very good guide

It doesn't go deep into the subjects. As it has to cover a lot of territory, a brief description is given for each. Some very specific topics are left uncovered. And as always with Lonely Planet guides, maps could improve SO much. You have to realy on other sources (Google Maps, etc.) to plan your trip and find those places the book talks about. Information was very accurate, though. I'd recommend it with these observations taken into account.

Excellent Companion

This and Fodor's Pacific Northwest served well as our guides to the Oregon & Washington coasts for three weeks. As longtime AAA (autoclub) members we still carry and occasionally refer to their guidebooks; but, prefer Lonely Planet & Fodor's.

Great book wit al lot of information

A great book with al lot of information of WA and OR. To bad there were not a lot of pictures. If you like pictures this isn't a book for you.

Good Book, Double Check Printed Prices

Great book and very helpful for our travels. Many of the prices printed were out of date (Hotels, entertainment, etc...) but prices change often so just call and check.

Great book to plan and prepare a visit to the North West

The book was a great help for preparing our first trip ever to the beautiful North West US. We stayed at the lonely planet lodging picks and went to see the sites they recomeneded, we had a wonderful time.

Editorial Review :

Our first-ever Newcomer's Handbook for Portland, this thirteenth title in the series approaches Portland with a sensibility appropriate to the city--with humor and a bit of delight in the quirkiness that exemplifies the Rose City. The guidebook features in-depth Portland neighborhood and suburban community profiles as well as chapters on all aspects of local life.

Welcome to Portland, one of the most livable urban areas in America! Call it Stumptown, Rose City, Beervana, Bridgetown, Puddletown, or PDX, it s your town now. (Just don t call it Portland, or-eh-GONE. The state name is pronounced OR-uh-gun. Practice before you arrive.) Portland is located at the northern end of the fertile Willamette Valley, roughly an hour east of the coast it s called the coast here, not the shore or the beach and an hour west of the crest of the Cascade Mountains. The high desert is a two-hour drive to the east, and world-class wineries are less than an hour southwest. Abundant recreational opportunities make the city a favorite of outdoor enthusiasts, and from the city s West Hills, and even from some downtown office buildings, it s possible to see the Columbia River Gorge and five snowcapped volcanoes: Mounts Hood, St. Helens, Adams, Rainier, and Jefferson. Top that, Topeka!

Of course, Portland s appeal transcends its spectacular setting. The city is known for its vibrant neighborhoods, progressive urban planning, environmental awareness, liberal politics, coffeehouse and brewpub culture, and, yes, for its rain. So what s it really like here? Well, though Portland enjoys more than its fair share of pleasant, well-preserved urban neighborhoods, connected to one another by bike lanes and transit and state law limiting the extent of urban sprawl it is also afflicted with strip malls, traffic congestion, ill-conceived development, and other assorted ills of the modern American metropolis. The key difference is that in Portland you can arrange your life so that you don t have to deal with those problems. If you want to live in a close-in neighborhood, within walking distance of cafés and food markets, and ride your bike to work every day, you can. (You won t necessarily be able to afford a house in such a neighborhood, however.) If you prefer to live in a suburban community, you can do that, too.

As for politics, Portlanders on average are more liberal than the citizens of the typical American burg when Money magazine rated Portland the country s best place to live in 2000, it warned conservatives to stay away but the city has a surprising diversity of political opinion, ranging from a strong libertarian contingent to a small community of Trotskyites. (The latter get nervous around ice picks.) Suburban communities are generally more conservative, and the region as a whole is probably no more liberal (or conservative) than any other large coastal metropolitan area.

If it s craft beer or coffee you re after, suffice it to say you won t be disappointed. There are 38 breweries in the Portland metro area, and locally produced craft beer makes up 11% of Oregon's beer consumption. (That figure may sound low, but it s by far the highest rate in the country.) And Portland's coffee scene is every bit the equal of Seattle's, with local roasters winning awards for both quality and sustainable business practices. Don't miss the burgeoning tea scene, either, based on well-established local tea manufacturers as well as an increasing number of unique tea houses. Many Portlanders consider coffee (or tea) essential for coping with the rain.
Ah, the rain. While it s true that Portland has its share of rainy days, much of the city's rainfall arrives in the form of a fine mist or drizzle. Often a day that starts out cloudy becomes bright and sunny by afternoon (or vice versa).

Fantastic!

Great book for anyone looking to relocate - or even for locals. I could have done without the generic sections on how to hire a mover or buy a house, but it's well worth skipping these parts for the info to be gotten. Great overview of neighborhoods, local resources, parks, etc.

Rating :

Solid Handbook

Basically everything I was looking for in a book since it provides a good initial sense of Portland's neighborhoods and suburbs (basically which one's might be nice to live in and which one's sound terrible)

One area that could be improved are the maps in the book. They are a little weak and the could be indexed against the neighborhood descriptions.

Great neighborhood profiles

I just visited Portland for the first time and was glad to have purchased this book before doing so. Great neighborhood profiles and all kinds of additional information. My favorite travel series so far- better than Frommer's.

Very helpful - Must have for Portland relocation

We were considering moving to Portland, Oregon and recently took a scouting mission there to see whether that was an idea worth pursuing. This book proved invaluable and I would highly recommend it to anyone considering the same thing. Its neighborhood descriptions were spot on and helped us focus our search.

This comprehensive guide covers more than 850 miles of trails.

Customer Review :

Great, if you like lung busting hikes

This is more a backpacking book than a hiking book. I have an earlier edition, and the majority of hikes are long (5+ miles one way) with very large elevation gains. I've been to Glacier a number of times, and there are many short, nice hikes. Also, the edition I have has very few hikes in the Goat Haunt area. The ones that are included are very long lung busters.

There is a lot of good information for a 20 something hiker/backpacker. Not so great for a 50+ hiker like myself (who still is willing to take on a decent backpack or long hike, but doesn't wish to die too early).

the essential hiking guide for Glacier

Glacier National Park is for hikers. The drive-through approach along the historic and spectacular Going to the Sun Highway is wonderful and memorable (and can be done with the efficient shuttle system), but the real action is provided by getting into the backcountry. It is truly the "last best place"!

We have been visiting the Park every year since 1974, and this guide has become our trusted advisor for planning day hikes and overnight trips. During the summer, a copy is kept at our bedside in order to plan new ventures. Glacier can be a challenging park to hike with rapid weather changes and highly varied terrain. We view this guide as important to survival as gore tex, first aid, water bottles and broken-in footwear.

not very helpful

I bought moon glacier and this book. I found that this book is useless because moon glacier covers a lot of good trails this book covers, and moon has other information. I think this book might be good for backcountry not for a day hike.

Simple trails and middle length trails are listed in moon glacier, and this book doesn't provide any other useful information about trails. The map is still not very clear. This book does list some very long trails, but usually you can search on internet to find this kind of information and even more specific.

I definitely would not recommend this book. Buy moon glacier instead!

good guide to Glacierand Waterton trails

I do a lot of hiking in the national parks and rely on Falcon Guides for good trail information. I have the first edition of the Glacier/Waterton guide so I thought I would get the latest edition for a recent trip. I still like this edition, but I agree with some other reviewers that there are some disappointments. Gone are the elevation profiles (which give you a snapshot of the gain and loss for the hike). As also mentioned, now several trails are combined on one map (GPS-compatible). That actually proves useful when several trails are part of a larger trail system (e.g., the Grinnell Complex), but this can be confusing for other trails (not to mention a little harder to find the maps for individual trails).

The first edition didn't have an index, so having one here is a plus (even if, as someone else mentioned, it's not as good as the second edition's). The third edition also has a nice trail comparison (though it should have distances) indicating which trails have waterfalls, lakes, meadows, etc. This edition also has several more pages of general information than the first edition, and descriptions of two additional trails. Although most of the trail descriptions seem to be the same as the first edition, the pictures accompanying them are new (though still not that great because they are in black and white).

On the whole, I recommend this book if you don't have an earlier edition. If you have the first or second edition you can probably get by with them if you also check other sources for updated park information (such as the free shuttle on the Going-to-the-Sun Road).

Decent hiking guide

Went went on several hikes listed in the book in a recent trip to Glacier. It is pretty informative, but there were a couple of shortcomings. The description for the location of trailheads could have been a little better and the description of some of the hikes we went on were a little vague. Overall, still a good book and would recommend to anyone wanting to hike in Glacier.

Banff

We used this last year and the prices were a little off but it came in handy for picking out the rustic lodges.

What to Do Where

The key feature of Frommer's guides is their "what to do if" pages. While I was on a tour which took us to certain attractions, there was sufficient free time to explore others. Having someone to guide you to the most worthwhile attractions depending on how much time you have available is helpful when visiting for the first time. I took some of their suggestions, but also found others just as interesting. The guide book is targeted for the mainstream adult audience rather than youth or those on a frugal budget. The pages of need to know items as well as items such as where to find bookstores and other make it very handy. The pages concerning accommodations and restaurants are as current as can be.

I highly recommend it for its target audience
