Customer Review :
A pretty good book
The Fodor's book excels in helping you find a nice hotel, with lengthy explanations about amenities and location. It only falls short in the general information section, where it can't come close to the Moon Handbook for Tahiti. But as fist mentioned, the Moon book doesn't provide sufficient detail on the properties themselves. Also, don't expect a Lonely Planet-type focus on low-end properties. It's not there. Still, you could easily get by with just the Fodor's book. It has all you need.

Tahiti
This book was very helpful to me in planning our trip to Tahiti. It has alot of useful information in it and it lists web sites for everything you could need to look up. The only problem I had was figuring out the exchange rate. It was also very easy to read and understand.

Tahiti & French Polynesia Guide
Tahiti & French Polynesia Guide: Open Road Publishing's Best-Selling Guide to Tahiti! (Open Road Travel Guides Tahiti and French Polynesia Guide) The title says it all...it's a great guide and reference book for French Polynesia. Gave us great tips and ideas of what to do on each of the many islands.

Tahiti guide
Great guide book. Tons of very good information. Helped me a lot! Recommend it highly especially for someone planning to do a land vacation on any of these islands. We are using it as a guide to help us decide what to do and where to go while we are in ports on our French Polynesia cruise vacation.

Very up to date, but less info than previous editions
Jan Prince really knows French Polynesia. She has lived and traveled there and it shows. Her descriptions of the resorts and restaurants is far beyond that which you find in most travel books; much more detailed and personal. However, I have the previous edition and felt it actually contained much more information (indeed it was a larger book). Still, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this for anyone thinking of traveling to French Polynesia. It's great for both planning your trip and using while there.

Beautifully done!
Jan Prince has done it again! I am a travel agent who specializes in the South Pacific and I love how she is 'travel friendly.' :) This book is pretty up to date. Hotel chains are constantly being bought out in the South Pacific so it is hard to keep these up to date I'm sure. The only thing I noticed is the Bora Bora Nui is no longer owned by Starwood but is now Hilton Bora Bora Nui. Excellent book with bright, colorful pictures to match! Highly recommend this!

Great Place to Start, but Give Me More!
It appears this is the first edition of the Tahiti and French Polynesia guide, and the only version I could find on Amazon was the Portable version. Maybe a more full version will come out in the future, but for now I just picked up the portable. We're planning our honeymoon to Tahiti, and the book has been invaluable in doing so. You can kind of tell it's a first edition though -- there are even some typos I've come across! Also, there is definitely a lot less information than other guides I've used from Frommer's, but I'm guessing that is the point of the "Portable" line of guides to keep them more travel-sized. Some of the information is a little outdated (already!), but using it as a starting point allows you to take what you learn from there and do the rest of the research online. For example, the exchange rate between XPF & USD is already off by about 10% (not in the favor of the USD), and the Sofitel Moorea they speak of was closed through all of 2006 for renovations, making me think even though this is a first edition, the information was put together in 2005 at the latest because there is no mention of the renovation -- and the hotel would obviously need to be re-evaluated by Frommer's after re-opening.
All in all though, there are some great money saving tips, a lot of information about places to eat, foods to try and sights to see, all in one portable book that we will definitely be taking with us when we go in July. Can't wait! Thanks, Frommer's for helping us save money by planning this ourselves instead of enlisting the help of a travel agent.

Frommer's first try with Tahiti...
is suprisingly good! Probobly because it is based on the Tahiti section of the South Pacific guide (now in 10th edition) it doesn't contain most of the first edition problems - inacurate info, little info etc. It is really nicely researched and though it is quite a slim volume it is really helpful. One of the best guides to Tahiti & Her Islands.
Rating :
Pretty good...
This is a helpful tool, except fot the fact that some of the inforamtion is not up to date, i.e. hotels/restaurants closed, hotel name changes. I realize that bewteen the time of print and sell is a couple months, but wouldn't it make sense to add a notes page of any changes before putting out for sale. Also some pictures of locations would be good to help in directing someone to the locations listed. Condsidering they have never been before.

Frommer's Tahiti & French Polynesia
Finding this book in Dallas at a major bookstore was next to impossible.Seems like there is little demand for books on the South Pacific. This may be due to expensive airfare to the area and lack of crusie ships traveling in those waters. The book contains the regular Frommer sections and much of it we have "tossed" since we are traveling on a cruise ship. Dining out, hotels, ect. won't be of much use. When I searched various web sites I did not find a lot of great information. This book at least puts the reader in touch with what's worth seeing in Tahati, Moorea and Bora Bora---these are stops our ship will make. The book has a copyright date of 2007 and the sites discussed throughout the book won't be changeing. We found the reading and recommedations to be good. Now we just have to see how accurate they are when we visit. If you are traveling to French Polynesia, this is the best book we have been able to locate. Hotel and dining prices are changeing so rapidly throughout the world I would personally not count of the book prices as being up to date.

updated when?
Been using this guidebook and LP's for making reservations for my island-hopping September 2008 trip, and find the listed accommodation prices in the moon edition to be woefully out of date, even accounting for the change in exchange rates. How can the LP Tahiti book, which was released in 2006, have more up-to-date information? Incredible!
Given this, I found it puzzling that so many previous people have rated this book so highly. When you look at their review histories, many are for books by this author. Hmmm.

Take This Book to Tahiti
How can I describe how good this guidebook is? Well, I would assert, in the extreme, that it would be better to read this book without visiting Tahiti than to visit Tahiti without reading this book.
This book will double, triple, quadruple...the accomplishments and satisfaction of a trip to Tahiti.
Everything about the islands in French Polynesia is here, all the essential info, enabling a visitor to be knowledgeable, suave, and inefficient, rather than ignorant, bumbling, and frustrated.
I mean everything. Maps, a glossary, conversion tables, statistics, history, culture, arts, lodging and dining (of course, and in great detail for each establishment), transportation, sports, entertainment, flora and fauna, healthcare...all wonderfully indexed.
You must, I mean you MUST, take this perfect guidebook with you to French Polynesia.
And you MUST use it to prepare for your trip. It would take you thousands of hours in front of your online computer to attempt to recreate even a small segment of author David Stanley's research, available for a very modest sum in this book.
The only plan better than taking this book to Tahiti, I suppose, would be to take David Stanley, himself.

Tahiti
Excellent guidebook. It covers everything from how to get there, accomodations and dining, maps, money exchange, and suggestions of things to see and do, to the history of the area, which will make what one sees more meaningful.

Out of date, get somthing more current.
Am using the 07 version to make current reservations for a 10 trip. Comparing the information I am getting from friends and the web (Infomation on ATMs, Hotels), is out of date. I would recommned getting either a more current book or plan on using the web to gather information which needs to be more current.

Outdated!!!
I was expecting more from lonely planet but aside from the maps, the book is obsolete. It also reads like a text book, no passion, no flavor, very boring. The sections on each area are not very big at all. ...

New edition is great!
This new edition of LP's Tahiti and French Polynesia guide was invaluable on my recent trip. The details of the out of the way islands like Maupiti are wonderful, the writing is funny but clear and informative. It had details of local places and special spots that were not in the old one. I read up on the writers and one of them is an American woman who lives there, I could really tell that she understood the perspective of a tourist. I carried this book in my purse for the two and a half weeks I just spent there and referred to it often. Especially for the directions, cultural details and local customs that I needed. I felt like I had a local friend as my guide. I also find it comforting that they take no freebies from the hotels. We stayed in small pensions and loved it, no one has screens in Tahiti it seems, but the guide did mention electric mosquito devices which was helpful, it also gave food details on the half-board places, and on the whole seemed accurate and well researched. The enthusiasm of the writing is infectious and I totally fell in love with Tahiti and the other islands we visited, I felt like I really got to know it better than I would have alone because of this book.

Not Very Good for a Lonely Planet Guide
Lonely Planet guides have been my guide of choice for some time but this one was not up to snuff. It just wasn't detailed enough. Two areas that bothered me was nothing about the weather and I could not find the specific snorkeling information I wanted and that was one of the prime reasons for going to Tahiti and purchasing the book. A general warning - the dollar will now only get you 75 polynesian francs instead of the 100 when the book was written. Not Lonely Planet's fault - the dollar has just sunk but what used to be expensive can now be almost ridiculous in price!

Another Good One
About a year ago i bought this book thinking we might try Tahiti this summer in 09. Insted we are going to Disney land and Huntington Beach with a caribbean cruise at the end of this year. Maybe next year. After reading threw this guide id say it did a good job. With the idea floating around of trying again in 2010 on making this trip i will for sure pick up the new Lonely Planet book on Tahiti.

Good, but needed more
I've used many Lonely Planet (LP) guides and found this one to be lacking their usual detail. I got the sense much hotel information was pilfered from Web surfing the basic info, rather than first-person investigation. While still a good book to take, next time (and there will be a next time because Tahiti is wonderful) I'll be sure take another guide along with it, and to thoroughly read actual travelers' online reviews. I'll also know the questions I need to ask before booking. My sense was that the reviewers weren't seeing things through the fresh-eyes of a first time traveler. The details, such as directions accommodation features were often lacking.
One thing I've always liked about LP is that they will list small locally owned budget places - that are occasionally hidden gems - whereas many other guides only list "approved" chain-type accommodations. However, in this book key information about lodging was missing. For example, it's very uncommon to find window screens in Polynesia despite a lot of mosquitoes, yet it is not standard for the book to say if there are screens or mosquito netting at each location (sometimes there are neither). Screens would be a big selling point for me. In Lonely Planet's India guide - which I was quite happy with - they deliberately note whether hotels have air-conditioning or not; in this guide this rather important information (for the tropics) is randomly added. Sometimes we'd get there and they'd have AC and sometimes they wouldn't. A more specific example is a pension primarily described as "friendly" - which it was in spades - with no mention that there's one bathroom shared with 8 people and that doesn't have hot water. With what prices are in Tahiti, poor information is very costly. One "resort" (our over-water bungalow splurge) was merely described as "competitive with other luxury resorts." Come to find out it had bedbugs and no air-conditioning. If level of detail can be evidenced by pages numbers, note that LP's Hawaii guide (five main islands) is 615 pages, while their Tahiti guide (50+ islands/atolls, with ten commonly traveled) is a only 287 pages.
