Customer Review :
A great starting point for the South Pacific
I'm extremely impressed at the South Pacific book by LP. Sometimes with books that are published as multi-country guides, you're worried that they're going to totally miss the smaller islands that themselves don't warrant their own individual books. To my surprise, places like Niue, Tuvalu, Pitcairn Island (itself a curious choice) were covered and yet misses Nauru and Palau.
However, nitpicking aside, this is a really good book, even for travel book standards. It's pretty comprehensive, and you can tell that the book had boots on the ground instead of less dubious LP authors just writing about what they find on the internet.
As someone who likes to find a brand of travel books and stick with them, I feel that Lonely Planet fell apart over the last few years and are slowly getting back to the top of the heap. I plan to use this book as the primary source of information for Fiji and Tuvalu for starters, and then see where the winds take me. I'm happy with a travel book for once, and that says a lot.

Interesting book, but Guam is NOT in it...
Please, reviewers, keep your books straight and watch what you represent! I was planning on visiting Guam and felt assured it was in this book. It is not. The book is interesting, but would never have bought it.

Good Book
We've checked this book out at the library before coming to Guam. There was a copy of it at our lodging place when we arrived. Now we need to have one of our own so that we know the in's an out's of Guam for our guests.

Great guide for islands that make up the South Pacific
Great guide book with excerpts and maps of the islands that make up the South Pacific and Micronesia. Maps are clear enough to plot out trips for the day, the week, or the whole vacation.
Lonely Planet is my go-to for guide books, due to the depth of research and information provided.
I picked this up for a friend who was going to Guam, and I was most impressed by the data provided in the form of history of the island, factoids, customs, and specialties.
I would pick up a Lonely Planet guide for all of my travels, and this one was especially well-received.

Editorial Review :
From the mysterious ruins of Pohnpei to Saipan's historic beaches, the islands of Micronesia offer the traveler hundreds of intriguing destinations to explore. Looking for more than the standard itinerary? Explore the sunken Japanese fleet in Chuuk Lagoon or celebrate with the locals at the annual Arts Festival in Palau. Neil Levy, a renowned South Pacific travel expert, brings the islands and atolls of Micronesia within reach of travelers who, on any budget, are looking to experience the full bounty of these incredible islands. This guide covers all four Pacific archipelagos: Guam; the Republics of Palau, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, and Nauru; the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, including Saipan, and the Federated States of Micronesia. Completely updated and revised, the sixth edition of Moon Handbooks Micronesia, is packed with the most current information on sightseeing options, diving and recreation, accommodations, and restaurants, as well as custom maps, color photographs, fascinating sidebars, and a complete coverage of the area's culture, history, and social issues.
Customer Review :
Barely mentions the sights
I got this book for an upcoming trip to Guam and Saipan. This book barely makes mention of the various sites and attractions, especially the WW II sites. With the War in the Pacific Museum still shut down, it's more important than ever to have a good accounting of what's there and how to get to it. The older 2000 edition Lonely Planet Micronesia has more information than this.

Very good concise guide
If what you're looking for is a concise yet very useful guide to the Western Pacific Islands, here is it. I used it in conjunction with other guides and found that it stands on its own as a comprehensive refernce source. Good buy.

HAPPY TRAVELS IN PARADISE
An excellent general travel review of the Micronesian islands. There's so much to see and do in paradise, that it's hard to cover everything in one volume covering over thousands of islands (you can either count at high or low tide) and many, many square kilometers of pristine, and sometimes wild, open ocean. I enjoyed the layout, maps, food and drug choices, and listing some of the more signiciant sights, along with a touch of the local languages and customs. I recommend it for any traveller going through, especially if you ride on the Continental island hopper, and get off at each major airport for a 2-3 days visit. The book is also hardy and fits nicely in a packsack. Good job, Author Levy.

Editorial Review :
Completely revised and updated with enhanced readability, James A. Bier's "Reference Map of Oceania" is the most comprehensive Pacific map in existence. Its main map and 52 inset maps of all major parts of the region provide a wealth of information in one source. Principal cities, towns, and villages are shown along with roads, topography, and population figures where available. The main map's Mercator projection is useful for planning routes. Time zones for the Pacific and individual countries are also included. It is the only map that clearly focuses on the political units of Micronesia, Polynesia, and Melanesia, using as its boundaries the 200-mile Extended Economic Zone. With more than 3,400 place names, "Oceania" will be an invaluable reference for everyone interested in or living in the Pacific islands, including teachers, students, historians, anthropologists, businesses, and travelers.
Customer Review :
Excellent coverage of Melanesia, Micronesia, & Polynesia
This map covers an area of the world that is not well represented in most world atlases. Excellent index. Fifty-one detailed inset maps.

Only Useful as an Overview
This map will only be useful to you if you don't have any other basic resources, like a general world atlas or travel guides, at home. The main map itself shows the entire South Pacific region, with country boundaries clearly marked, but individual islands reduced to the size of dots. Major islands are shown on inset maps, however even these are still tiny - you will find bigger, more detailed, and more accurate maps of the same islands (and many more) in travel guidebooks to this region by Lonely Planet or Moon. In short, unless you just want a general map to hang on your wall, don't waste your money on this one!

amazing map
I've been looking for a map for a long time of Oceania because after college I'm settling on an island by myself in search for waves. I could'nt believe all the islands I've never known about. If I was to purchase one map in conjunction with nautical charts, it would be this one.

Excellent Book
One of the most informative books about diving in the Pacific , next to Tim Rocks lonely planet guides for diving and snorkelling in Micronesia this is the best , only this one accomodates all the islands in one book meanwhile lonely planet is done over three books . I definately recommend it !

Needs to Do More Research
While Mr. Leonard may have a good handle on the diving in and around Guam, he hasn't taken the time to research all of his findings. In his book he stated that the local military "rarely contributes to the local economy". Absurd. As a member of that military i know for a FACT that we are a vital part of the economy on Guam. We shop in off base, we LIVE off base, we eat off base, we PLAY off base. IF you can make a statement that blatantly incorrect, then what else in the book was "inaccurate"?

Great info, Maps, & Pics
Wasn't sure what to expect when ordering, but am very happy with the purchase. The maps are great! I have lived in Guam & find that the info in the book is very helpful. I'm still learning my way around the dive world here & now know where some of these places are that people are talking about. It has also helped plan our next dive trip to other islands. Great info on Palau, Chuuk, & Yap. So much to see & so little time!!!

Best dive guide for Micronesia
I went back and bought 2 more for my travel companions! We just came back from Truk & Yap and I never saw my book, it was traveling around our group so much! We are planning to return to Palau, so I bought extra copies as self defense! The best dive guide I have found to the islands.

Editorial Review :
This travel book follows Paul Theroux's explorations of Micronesia and Polynesia by canoe.
Customer Review :
Don't go there!
In 1980 I proofread a magazine excerpt of a Paul Theroux book. It began with his getting up early to catch a train from Boston to begin a journey to Patagonia. Who cares how early this bloody New Englander had to get up or what he had for breakfast? I'd thought Patagonia was a mythical country. I guarantee you it wasn't in my geography book. Turns out it's part of Argentina. Big deal.
But the guy is a real writer. In The Happy Isles, he recounts the tale of how he brought a folding boat, about the size of a big suitcase, to every Pacific island you've ever dreamed about and paddled around them all. Forget those islands -- Theroux says they are mostly full of lazy, suspicious people who stuff themselves with imported junk food. Some are Christian religious fanatics, some are vicious pagans, and some are both.
The first two chapters are on New Zealand, and I imagine those folks would shoot Theroux on sight if he had the temerity to return. He was not complimentary.
Theroux is not Mr. Sweetness and Light, but that's all the more enjoyable as he demolishes the images of tropical paradises, whether in Meganesia, Melanesia, Polynesia, or Hawaii. Stay home! Stay home, pour a Mai Tai, and enjoy this delightful putdown.
