Rick Steve's Istanbul

Are the maps visible? I've looked at the sample, but no maps are included. Just learning to use my Kindle, and am having difficulty with guidebooks.I find it difficult to navigate Let's Go Turkey, and impossible to read its maps. Can maps be enlarged on Kindle as on a computer? If not, I don't see much use in guidebooks on Kindle.
PS I know this is not a review, but how else can I get help?

Good, But ...

I have used Rick Steves' guides for Portugal, Spain, and Italy (including his specialty city books for Venice, Rome, and Florence). I typically read in advance of our visits abroad Rick's guides as well as other materials, usually a DK guide and novels and histories involving the locale, and whatever I can find on-line. I have always found that Rick's guides to be invaluable re: practical tips, walking tours and solid explanations of major sights. This review is written prior to our trip to Istanbul. The guide is in the same format (a good thing). I note, however, that this guide is written by a husband & wife who apparently are local tour guides. I mention this because Rick's guides typically include a few recommendations of guides, ranging from companies that are staffed by academics (like Context Travel whom we used in Rome) & expensive to moderate or even cheap for quick highlight tours. The R. Steves' Guide of Istanbul ONLY RECOMMENDS the company owned by the husband & wife who really authored Rick's city guide book of Istanbul. It mentions no other companies. This is doubly disappointing and seems very self-serving. I say doubly because when one checks out the company on-line it's website does not appear to have been recently updated and does not list any prices for its standard menu of tours. That aside, the guide otherwise appears to be Rick's standard fare of advice (a good thing, in my opinion). This is why I rate this book as "Good, But ...."

Weaker Than Other Rick Steves Books

I love Rick Steves books. His travel philosophy matches mine, and I find his books incredibly useful. His Istanbul guide has a wealth of useful info - but also many weaknesses compared to his other books... Sights and walking tours are great; history information and trivia is great and entertaining; many restaurant recommendations are also good. However, the hotels recommended are all way more expensive than what I managed to find. Many restaurants recommended were dissappointing. Also, there is practically no info on Asian part of Istanbul - which is surprising knowing Rick's philosophy of travelling as 'temporary local'... In the Old Town one can never feel like temporary local - only like a moving target... while in the Asian part of Istanbul I and my family felt way more pleasant, and in a way easier to blend...
This book is still better than the other books offered - just some areas are not up to the standards of other Rick's books, in my opinion.

Excellent overall guidebook of Istanbul

Rick Steve made an excellent decision to have guides Lale Surmen Aran and Tankut Aran write this book. They clearly know and love their city, know what is helpful and interesting to tourists, and wrote a very thorough, informative, and user-friendly guide.

I appreciated the format of the concise Sights and Experiences sections, followed by chapters offering more in-depth information on the self-guided walks and tours. This format was extremely useful as I planned my days and then toured the city. Simple, useful maps are included in each walk and tour section.

I would like to have seen the chapters on Turkish History and Culture and Understanding Islam at the beginning of the book rather than the end, as I think they are of great importance to westerners visiting this amazing city.

Another book I highly recommend to supplement this book is Istanbul's Bazaar Quarter: Backstreet Walking Tours. This book is written in the same spirit as the Old Town Back Streets Walk chapter in Rick Steve's book, but offers four separate walking tours, and goes into much more detail about the bazaar quarter and the people you will meet there. Istanbul's Bazaar Quarter: Backstreet Walking Tours

Rick Steve's Istanbul was my first Rick Steve guidebook, and overall I was very pleased. I highly recommend Istanbul, and I highly recommend this book.

Istanbul Made Easy

Just returned from Turkey. Book was handy to carry and very accurate. Nice to know the hours and days that a destination is open and available to visit before you waste time getting there and find out it's closed. Maps were accurate and easy to follow. Comments were right on target. Saved us hours chasing around the city and allowed us to visit those important sites that are awesome.

May Need Magnifying Glass!

I have previously bought DK guides of other places that we have visited, including Rome, Venice, Florence, Madrid, etc. They are truly mini-encyclopedias and well worth buying for an in-depth explanation of destinations. I am rating this guide of Istanbul in advance of our visit. The only negative I would note is that the DK guides pack so much information into their volumes by, among other things, using a font for their text that is VERY SMALL. (Yes, I am not a youngster and I do wear corrective lenses.) I don't know if they are available in a Kindle version. If so, that option or using an old-fashion magnifying glass may be necessary if your eyes, like mine, begin to tear at the sight of such fine print! I still recommend them for their in-depth contents. (I typically also purchase a Rick Steves guide, if available for the destination, to help me prioritize what to see.)

Excellent overview of a great city

I have to admit that I've just looked at DK Eyewitness Travel books I can't say how many times in the bookstore without giving them a second glance and I can now say with authority that I'm sorry I haven't checked them out a whole lot sooner.

This guide about the great city of Constantinople/Istanbul should be required reading pre-departure. The guide is honest, thorough, and goes into surprisingly great detail in as concise a space as possible about the must-see tourist sites (such as Haghia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, etc.), but it also gives great tips about less-visited sites (such as a few Byzantine churches) that are worth the trip. The history of the city aone in the beginning is worth the price of the book.

Having this book with you when you visit Istanbul is very good company and will help to make your tourist or study abroad experience complete - and I speak from experience.

Twenty-three bucks isn't bad to plunk down for a guide of this caliber. - Donna Di Giacomo

Customer Review :

Interesting and easy to understand

I have a number of Greek travel books, and this is the best one by far. Having a package that includes the Greek islands and Athens (where most foreign travelers go first before heading to the islands) is especially nice. There is so much information, the only real things that are left out are some of the smaller islands that aren't visited as much and, as another reviewer said, really in-depth maps. I doubt they could fit them all in one book and still be so comprehensive. The book is split up by region (Athens, Dodecanese, Cyclades, Sporades, etc.). At the beginning of each section there's the top five or so reasons to go to that destination, a small summery of its geography, a small map, and pictures. On the following page there are interesting facts (with Crete, for example, a small article about shopping there), how to make the most of your time, and more small articles which are different for each island that range from discussing quality of lodgings, to an article about the foods of that region, and when to go. The chapter then splits up by island (or section for larger islands) and each of these is split up by city (with approximate location ie "80 km (50 Mi) east of Heraklion". These sections describe the various sights and resturants (each with its own description). Many include phone numbers, websites, and times/months when they're closed. It does the same with hotels, specially listing if a hotel has wi-fi or a refridgerator. These also have price ranges included. Each island has its own section on shopping and nightlife/arts. Then it concludes with explanations of various means of travel in that group of islands: air, moped, car, ferry. It follows this with a list of contacts for things like emergencies, media there, tour options, etc. There's also a 29 page section on various cruises. What I found most impressive with this book was that it had a somewhat laid-back, even humorous, tone (no snobby I-know-everything-about-travel style) and it treated Greece with dignity. Some travel books seem to think of the islands as some vacation to be conquered, a flurry of detached museum visits and getting drunk at a disco, without the enjoyable aspects of a vacation that engages the culture of the people, the food, and the landscape to make it more enriching. And yet the book is not boring, and it highlights modern sights as well as ancient. The (multiple) writers talk in depth about the various places as if they have been there not too long ago and with cautions against mistakes travelers can make, but without seeming to talk down to you. In fact the book is, at times, actually funny. It is filled with fun facts (and not just the same old ones about Greek gods or archeaology) and many articles, especially in the introduction, discussing things like the problem of fires in Greece, smoking, customs of the people, modern art, public displays of affection, being part of the European Union, siestas, temperature, and a four page article about Greek food to name a few. At the end of the book there's a 37 page section of important information including mail, tipping, customs/duties, electricity, calling outside and inside of Greece, tranportation, tours, booking your trip with a travel agent vs. internet. (There's also a very small section of basic Greek phrases and, of course, an index). All around this book has a huge amount of well-organized information and is interesting, too.

Ok...

The book is easy to read and well organized. The Athens section looks pretty good. However, it didn't feel like there was enough info for Santorini & Naxos, which are the only ones I read. There were no detailed maps of the island cities & only a few things to see & few places to eat/sleep.

Rating :

Wonderful book!

This book is really well organized, makes planning a trip around the islands super easy. Made reservations at one of the recommended hotels, and although we haven't been on our trip yet am very excited. Great book and easy to read!
