Too many grammatical errors & unhelpful hotel reviews
I am reviewing the 10th Edition (pub. Jan. 2007).
Throughout, this book is riddled with grammatical errors. Also, with regards to the hotel reviews for Singapore, Penang, & Kuching, most sound like dumps to stay in. Surely there must be better places to include in this travel guide.

A Very Good Guide Book
I spent the better part of the afternoon reading this book as I'm planning on a trip to Singapore and Malaysia this week. The Lonely Planet can usually (although not always) be counted on to provide for solid information on travel destinations and this one does just that. It's pretty well written and everything is nicely laid out. I particularly enjoyed the historical overview at the beginning and the section on the national psyche. Malaysia and Singapore (I didn't read about Brunei) sound like thoroughly enjoyable and interesting places. I especially appreciated the description of KL as being something of a nightmare for pedestrians. That's the type of honesty that travelers need, and it's also what helped make the Lonely Planet famous in the first place.

Not yet received in mail.
Unfortunately the postal service in China is sporadic and somewhat unreliable. I am still hoping that the book I ordered in early October will arrive soon. The reason I purchased the book is to plan a December holiday in Singapore and Malaysia.

Good guide for trip to Langkawi
Purchased this book to get basic information about the Island of Langkawi. Provided great restaurant list and information about getting around the island. Highly recommend this book if traveling to Malaysia.

Editorial Review :
Top 10 Singapore is the latest addition to DK Eyewitness Travel's critically acclaimed Top 10 series, and the timing couldn't be better! Every year, a record number of Western travelers are discovering Singapore, making it one of the most popular destinations in Southeast Asia. From business travelers with limited sightseeing time, to students with weeks to explore, Top 10 Singapore is the perfect introduction to all the sights, sounds, tastes, and experiences Singapore has to offer.

Typical DK Top Ten book: High level overview
I'm planning a trip to Singapore in the near future, and I always buy the DK Top Ten books as the starting point before I buy a more informative book. So when it comes to learning something new about a city and wanting to see what the major attractions are, DK helps you plan them out and give you enough information to start to mentally plan out the trip.
I would never use the DK Top Ten books as the sole means to plan a trip, since they're meant for quick reference and a high level overview. Still, time after time, these books always reside in my cargo pants pockets on trips and are borrowed by others because it's quick and to the point.
For the price, you can't beat it, but you'll want to shop for another book after you get this.

Smart approach for a guide book
The PLUS: 5 Stars! The guide takes a pyramidal approach to the sights of your destination. So you slowly can work yourself through the areas that really interest you by easily skipping things you would not want to see or visit at all. It also makes it easy to find the things that are important to you because the descriptions are small enough and pictures further make it easy to attract your interest or pass things by.
The MINUS: 4 Stars! The good about the Maps is that they are there at all and also that there is an index of some streets. The contained foldout maps though helpful when there is nothing else at all are not my favorite because they are quite small and are more an overview to identify the area where something is to be found on a better more detailed map. The same maps as the foldouts are also on a separate map that is detachable. This is a good idea but they are way to small and hard to read especially in dim light and in an awkward format to be really useful. - When available, I rather get a local map from the tourist office and transfer my destinations to it.
SUMMARY: 5 Stars! This guide is an extremely useful sightseeing guide and small enough to be carried with you all the time for quick reference. It also allows you to choose the amount of detail you want to follow for the town: top 10 Highlights - top 10 to each highlight - top ten to some general categories like museums, bars, hotels, restaurants, shopping, and also some specific categories just for this destination like stunning places to worship or top 10 hawker centers and food courts. Insider tips or as they call the sections: "Street smart" round up this little guide. The maps are OK but could be improved. The deficiency of the maps though should not detract from the overall usefulness of this guide for your destination. This is true for a first time visitor with limited or all kinds of time and also for the return visitor, who wants to to repeat some destinations in more detail or avoid the same old top ten but venture out into new territory.

Very good reccomendations and overview
We are planning a short trip to Singapore and I found this book to be very good at pointing out things that were a must-do and what was a waste of time. Also had very good lists of things such as indeginous foods (and what was in them), language barriers (very amusing section), things to watch out for etc. Also had a great overview on food, where to eat and what was not worth it. It was good at listing things that were a one-day trip must do and a 3-4 day trip must do.
I definately liked this book over some of the other travel books I have read. It has a very personal touch (some amusing anicdotes) and a good perspective on things.

Too much text, not enough pictures
Full of useful information, but overall i dislike guidebooks that dont include pictures of the major sites...i just think its too confusing and difficult to decide which places to check out in a limited amount of time based on just comments-- sometimes a picture is much more helpful than half of page of text. For those who are looking for a very detailed explanation or need help with food and lodging, but if its just site-seeing spots you need help with i'd say look elsewhere~

Read the online travelblogs instead for an 'honest' guide with opinions/commentaries
The city guide is good in laying out bus routes, transportation, shopping sites, and noted restaurants, but I was counting on Lonely Planet to deliver a guide paired with an honest side-commentary, the same way that they did in their guide for Thailand (that one is really useable, highly recommended!).
Well perhaps it's because Singapore is a not a very good place for tourism, bottom line. (Shopping, probably yes). Sentosa overall is a waste of time; even the dolphins they use in the dolphin show look tired and anemic. The presence of Geylang red-light district that government turns a blind-eye on also lacks the full acknowledgment in this book. Well, it's there in some passing notes, but for there is no comment like: "for a 'disciplined and moral' authoritarian state, Geylang is a famous hangout for the business travellers, and prostitutes are trooping that long street like gold mine." The book should have had a good commentary on the hypocritical presence of this place.
Also, a young professional Singaporean shared a story to me that Lee Kwan Yew once pompously said that as long as he is alive, there will be no casino in Singapore. Well, yes, he is still right, there are now two casinoes being built simultaneously! I hope the next edition includes these comments.
In exchange for the discipline that Singapore brags about, you cant deny upon your first landing that the country is an authoritarian state. And hypocrisy is prone in authoritarian states. Also undeniable: the press isnt free. Open the newspaper, and the local op-ed pieces discuss nothing, but taxi routes... Interesting national issues! These honest trivias and insights should be in the LP guide.
This review might appear as a criticism more of the place than the book. But Im saying that the book should have highlighted these criticisms honestly. For example, in the intro, the overall warning at the start of the book should be that Singapore is for business travellers and shoppers only, not for interesting visits.
These side comments (a la Theroux) add to the spice of any travelguide/travelogues.
I was thankful for the bus routes and resto though, so 3 stars!

Great guide - good information
Just got back from two weeks in Singapore and took this guide with me for reference. I found it to be thorough and complete with information on the less "touristy" area as well as the normal places to see. I would reccommend this book for anyone who wants to see the real Singapore.

Eyewitness Guide to Maylaysia and Singapore
This is an excellent product in many ways. Good text, gorgeous pictures, informative re shopping, food and cultural matters - the beautiful photos of same help a great deal. This is less useful as a primary guide book like the Lonely Planet, which has more nuts and bolts information re places to eat, stay etc., than as anexcellent adjuct. They are really good together to give a complete picture. I lived in Singapore some time ago, and have traveled extesively in Maylasia, and the iformation in the book looks to be acurate as far as I can tell.

A great book, but probably too big for just Singapore
This is a great book- full of interesting information, gorgeous photos, and travel tips. We just went to Singapore and it was useful, along with the Groovy MAP 'N' GUIDE SINGAPOREand Fodor's Singapore's 25 Best, 3rd Edition (25 Best).
The only downside is the size. While small enough to carry in a bag, it's not THAT small- and the section on Singapore is relatively smallcompared to the malaysia section. Overall, while I'm happy I bought it, the other 2 books went with me around town, while this one stayed in the hotel.

Good guide
This is a decent guide but I would definately purchase another guide to supplement it. I went on a trip to Kuala Lumpur( I just returned last night) and I took this guide as well as the Lonely Planet Kuala Lumpur guide and they were great together. I did use my LP guide a lot more, but this one does include a lot of good information about all the different sights.

A typical excellent DK Eyewitness guide
If you are looking for where to stay, where to eat, what is cool, get a Lonely Planet guide. This is a typical DK Eyewitness guide - packed with detailed historical and cultural information, superb illustrations, an easy-to-follow maps. The information is well-written and is presented in a easy-to-read-and-grasp manner.
I usually get both the Lonely Planet (or similar) and DK.

Very good travel guide to Singapore
I used this guide for a 2 day trip to Singapore. The guide was helpful as an overview to Singapore. We used it to find an authentic Malay restaurant on Boat Quay, which was really excellent, and seemed to have a lot of locals, even though it was in a tourist area. There is actually a lot of interesting things to do in Singapore and the guide helped us find them.
