I love DK travel guides
Just the right size to carry with you. Very convenient to read about sites as you are walking through them, or decide where you want to go. Beautiful layout and photos. Not so useful for hotel, restaurant recommendations. I haven't used it on the trip to Egypt yet, but I have used this guide for other trips and it's my favorite.

Our trip to Egypt
It was very informative when we were reviewing our vacation and the photos we had taken. The pictures in the book are beautiful.

This is Not a guidebook.
Badly organized--like an encyclopedia on Egypt and the main (obvious) touristy areas to go, with specific recommendations on restaurants and hotels at the very back of the book and not within each major destination section. Even there, the comments about each hotel and restaurant are just okay with not enough low budget options. Each page is PACKED with information and it's overwhelming, a lot of it is repeated over and over throughout the book - when I just want information quickly. The font is too small in some places where there are THREE columns on one page! It's too much and it makes finding answers too difficult when you need it fast. There are pretty pictures that take up two pages, when I'd rather save the weight on my pack and have useful information.. which this book doesn't have much of! This is a pretty glossy book, but it's supposed to be a travel guide, not something to sit on your coffee table to tell your friends "I want to go to Egypt someday!"
I want a travel guide that suggests the hidden gems of an area, this doesn't do that AT ALL. For the broad overviews that this book provides, I can do a fast google search and get better and more accurate information. For example, this book suggests credit cards aren't widely accepted, but Wikipedia Travel, message boards, and people living there say that isn't true (except for the most rural areas).
Want to go SCUBA diving? Great--there's a directory list of outdoor activities that includes some diving clubs (listed in the index under Diving and not SCUBA) but no price estimates or reviews of the places it lists, and it doesn't even say where the dive shop is located. Somewhere in Egypt! What? Instead, there's a beautiful page with pictures about all the sea-life you might see. Pretty, but not useful! Very Important information, like the proper amounts of tipping for specific activities is hidden in a small 4 inch long narrow column at the back of the book and only gives 3 or 4 examples, but tipping is an important part of Egyptian customs and should have been highlighted and easier to find. Maybe a tipping bar listing suggestions for several common actions that you should tip for--calling a taxi, carrying luggage, opening a door, pushing an elevator button (you can find this on WIkipedia travels page).
When I'm actually in Egypt this book might be helpful, but it takes too long to get information, long introductions and descriptions rather than providing useful and fast info., am I going to want to carry it around? Will it be better than the local brochures? I research which guidebook I wanted, chose the one with the best recommendations, so maybe this is the best one out there (there are a lot of complaints that there isn't a good one for Egypt). But, you're probably better off picking up brochures in English (or just going on the really inexpensive tours!) while you're in Egypt or going to the wikitravel page and printing it off to take with you.
Save $17. I wish I had.

Beautiful but not enough content
Purchased this book for our recent trip to Egypt, it's beautiful as they all are, but I don't believe they include enough content as say Frommer's or Rick Steve's books. I love the pictures, but if I was going somewhere and needed an in depth guide I would not get it.

Egypt
A travel guide that goes into great detail and is full of beautiful pictures. The most informative and complete I have found.

'True-blue'
Well done. Here's a 'true-blue' look at the modern hunting environment, warts, warthogs, and all. Peter has told the story well, without any blood on the package.
This book should find a home with a wide audience anywhere (and if one cares to read carefully), the love of the dangerous, the hilarious, and the beauty of the natural landscape shows through.
Anyone who cares a damn about nature in natural surroundings will see that the 'animals' are sometimes on the other side of the fence. A good story, well told.

You'll Feel Like You're There
This book makes me want to go to Africa and live the life of the author. I think that is the greatest compliment I can give it!
Well worth reading!

Only Food Runs
I recently read the non-fiction book Whatever You Do Don't Run: True Tales of a Botswana Safari Guide. This story is about Peter Allison's detailed and amusing tales from when he moved from Australia to Africa. I have never been out of the country, nor on a safari but after reading this book I felt as if I had just been on one. I always have wanted to go on a safari in Africa and now I want to work as a safari guide there, too. All the crazy and unbelievable stories that Allison shares opens up the reader's eyes on how different and sometimes scary a new continent can be, but also extremely rewarding.
In the beginning of the book I didn't quite understand why Allison would want to move from his suburban home in Australia to the far less developed continent of Africa. There are so many creepy bugs and diseases you can catch, but then I realized that there are more than dangerous organisms living in Africa. There are beautiful sunsets, majestic animals and the awesome stories that come with living in Africa. Allison had a thirst for adventure that needed to be quenched. This was satisfied when he traveled to Botswana.
Allison easily admitted he made lots of mistakes while being in Africa. He drove a Land Rover right into a river infested with hippos, and he also had to search for a half-naked tourist who is a member of the British royal family. While reading this book, I learned that it is ok to try new things and to be not so great at them. Allison had no idea what he was getting himself into, he had originally planned only to stay for two years but he spent at least a dozen years being a safari guide. He fell in love with Africa and its many endangered animals.
After reading this book I am going to try to convince my parents to take me to Africa and go on a safari. And I am recommending this book to anyone who likes a good laugh and some very odd yet pleasing stories.

Very Inspirational Book! Teaches How Great it is to Find a Career You Love, Rather Than One That Pays the Big $$$
Peter Allison has done what most people never do, he found a place and a career he loved and even though he no doubt would have made more money returning to Australia and getting "a proper job" he found true happiness doing something he absolutely loves. Peter is a safari guide in the African country of Botswana (as well as South Africa at the start). He shares with readers the highs and the lows experienced both with the clients and behind the scenes as well.
He isn't a professionally taught writer, but I think this adds to the enjoyment of the narration and the picture in your mind that he is a safari guide talking to you. Although some of the book's recounting of true tales are obviously a bit embellished, they are all entertaining and the ones which are obviously exaggerations are done so to enhance the readers' experience as he would no doubt do when on safari when telling tales to his guests. For example stepping on a crocodile, in the real world the croc would have killed him long before he realised he was on it. Having worked with Australian ones in a wildlife park, I know they don't feel a lot different to logs, and you wouldn't even dream of walking beside water if there was any chance one could be found in it, let alone be up to your waste pushing a boat. But still it is a fun tale. Likewise the wrapping himself in chains would not prevent death by one if attacked, the photograph of himself with the British and American tourists after driving and getting stuck in the middle of the hippo lake is evidence there's a difference between reality and what he told us happened in that story. He said he sat on the bonnet after swimming back out and attaching the chains to the vehicle, it was then pulled ashore along with its occupants, yet the photo has him with only the bottom half of him wet, just like the other tourists and the vehicle still stuck in the middle of the water when they are all safe on the bank. But good tales are what make being guided by someone so enjoyable and there are very good tales in here.
It is obvious Peter loves what he does, this book if nothing else is inspirational in making you think twice as to if you are doing the same. But it is something else as well, it is entertaining and educational too, and very much so! Peter also lets you get to really know him through his narration, as well as his fellow guides. Therefore the chapter when an African colleague passes away is very moving. As are his delights, moments of terror and occasional sadness with his experiences with the African wildlife. I will definitely check out Don't Look Behind You!: A Safari Guide's Encounters with Ravenous Lions, Stampeding Elephants, and Lovesick Rhinos which is more of his adventures as an African safari guide.

A great book to read
First off, this book was great. It really makes you want to go and try doing something like this. Maybe I feel this way because I am still only a freshman in high school and I still like some excitement but this job seems awesome. In regards to what Lalyc Lalyc2000 said, I completely disagree. I believe Peter Allison did talk about his feelings as a survival guide in many of his encounters, "Like every other guide or wildlife lover who is eventually eaten or trampled, I felt I had a bond with this herd..." Clearly Peter does love animals if he can put himself in context with other animal lovers. Also although in much of his book he did talk about tourists being annoying, they all are involved in great stories. Between funny Japanese tourists who ask him to repeat his near death encounter with a lion, or Germans who laugh at his whacking himself in the genitals many of his encounters were very funny. Also he had a career of over 7 years as a guide and if he put every encounter down the book would be extremely boring (as well as very long). I personally picked up the book and wanted a story of close calls and funny stories, packed with dangerous animals in between, especially after seeing the title. I did not want a book called Whatever you do don't run that discuses everyday encounters with normally tourists who aren't humorous at all and don't see anything cool or have anything fun happen. Many people who see these animals may be too ignorant to realize that what they are saying, or doing may be odd or ignorant and that's how funny stories form. Overall this book was hilarious and a great read.

One of the Better Morocco Guides
Lonely Planet's newest Morocco Travel Guide does a nice job of condensing the best places to see in Morocco; it even outlines some of the better places to go trekking, such as Mgoun National Park. I live and work in Morocco with an eco-travel company and we recommend this particular guide on Amazon.com to those who want to research the country and places to see. From Fez to Marrakesh and even highlighting some places of interest in Western Sahara (see Allah's Garden, a nonfiction account set in the region), Lonely Planet is unparalleled in their in-country research, facts, and even some off-the-beaten-path locales.

Not great for backpackers
I've used quite a few Lonely Planet guides in the past for France, Italy, New Zealand, and Spain. I used this guide on my backpacking trip to Morocco and I was fairly disappointed.
For a backpacker interested in lower cost options, this guide generally lacks them. In fact many of the Author's Recommendations on accommodations are over 700 dhm a night, that is about what I would spend in several days for everything food, accommodation, and transport.
Mistakes included poor recommendations, bad price ranges, missing transportation options, and lots of mistakes in the maps. The maps for the Imlil / Oukaimeden areas are poor. Their warning about not using them for navigation should be taken seriously. Trails are roads and roads are trails.
I also had access to a Rough Guide Morocco for this trip and it was not a great improvement. In fact the book's binding fell apart after a few days. It is also bloated with lots of useless info, and is thus almost twice as think as the lonely planet guide. It does have a much better section on the south and Western Sahara.
If you feel that you need a guide, then buy an old used guide and save yourself some money.

Saved my butt a few times!
The Lonely Planet series never disappoints. It always has great information and tips that really help out. I like how honest the writers are about both the positive and negative aspects of the places they are reviewing. When travelling the books become my number 1 resource.

Excellent and detailed information
I particularly like the approach this book has about the special cultural concerns and attitudes of Morocco. I bought this book because I borrowed it from the library and really liked it; I didn't want to return it, so I got my own! I will take it when I go to Morocco--high praise, indeed, as I prefer to travel light.

Minor historical event not taught in schools
Absolutely fascinating book. It did take me some time to get into the story but once I did, I couldn't put it down. I do read a lot of historical books, don't let the fact that you haven't heard of this story before lead you to believe it's not worth reading about. Fascinating characters and insight into a different place and different time. Highly recommended!

Amazing!!!
This is an Amazing story of survival, and the best thing about it is that it is a true story!!! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading. It is a very entertaining read.

gruesome tale
I can't believe this is all true, one of the most gruesome books I ever picked up. Could not finish it, it was too depressing.
Rating :
Incredible, a must read
I have a love of reading true survival, history and adventure. This combines all three into one. Its almost like reading an adventure novel yet its a true story. I am surprised I had never even heard of Captain Riley before this. Every American should know this story. The author does an excellent job with taking Riley's original account and combining it with the account of one of the crew members. I could not put the book down. Its amazing, sad, shocking, has some happy endings. It just really makes you appreciate what you have and our way of life, the things we do not have to worry or think about on a daily basis. (at least for me) I think this needs to be made into a movie.
Rating :
Wow
What an amazing story of courage, faith, and perseverence. I couldn't put it down. Normally, I prefer to read the books as written by the original author but Dean King did an amazing job of adding just the right amount of background information to help the reader understand the political and environmental forces the men of the Commerce were facing. This is a must have book for any collection. I can't wait to read it again.

Fun, Intriguing Book
This is a great book for kids who enjoy interactive creative reads. The extras are always nice to accompany these books. The Egyptology book was snapped up by my students and they loved it. It was quite enjoyable to them and they read more than they often do in books. The big eye was really interesting to them.
Rating :
Excellent!
What makes it good is historical accuracy paired with the explorative nature of the book. It is colorful, full of pictures and many useful/random tidbits.
Rating :
good book
lots of good information for the younger reader. Also a good segway into more involved books.

Not as good as I expected
I was actually disappointed in this Ology book. I have two others and the way the information is presented in them plus the little extras were just better in those. There weren't as many exciting extras in this one as I expected and the "mummy cloth" example was a bit disappointing. I bought this for my daughter and she became bored quickly due to the confusing way the pages were written and presented. I am hoping the next Ology I choose will be more like the first two I have.
